Cortina d'Ampezzo is located in the North of Italy, in the heart of the southern Dolomitic Alps which, in 2009, were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
There is no airport or railway station in Cortina: the last part of the journey is always by bus or by car.
By Air
If you travel by air, the closest and best-connected airports are:
- Venice Marco Polo (recommended): Cortina Express and Dolomiti Bus run a joint coach service from the airport (tourist bus parking) directly to Cortina, five times a day, in about 2h30. Seats should be booked in advance on the Cortina Express website. See the timetable on the right. ATVO (line 29) also runs coaches from the airport to Cortina, with additional runs during the winter season.
- Treviso: the same Cortina Express coaches stop in Treviso at Via Arma di Cavalleria (not at the airport), about 2h15 from Cortina. Take a taxi from the airport to the bus stop.
- Innsbruck: take bus line F to Innsbruck main station (about 20 minutes). From there, take a train to Dobbiaco/Toblach (change at Fortezza/Franzensfeste) and then the regional bus line 445 to Cortina (about 50 minutes).
Another possibility is to rent a car at the airport. However, be aware that
winter in the Alps leads to difficult driving conditions. Roads might be icy, slippery, or covered in snow. In these regions
winter gear for the car is compulsory. You will either need to mount winter tires or have snow chains in the car.
By Train
If you come from Italy, the easiest option is to take a train to Venezia Mestre and then the Cortina Express or Dolomiti Bus coach from the
Mestre railway station (see the timetable on the right).
Alternatively, you can take a
train to
Calalzo-Pieve di Cadore-Cortina, and from there the
Dolomiti Bus line 30 to Cortina (about 1 hour).
If you come from Northern Europe by train, you should first reach Innsbruck. From there, take a
train to
Dobbiaco/Toblach and then the
regional bus line 445 to Cortina.
By Car
If you come from the South, drive to Venice and then take the A27 motorway North towards Belluno. At the end of the motorway, follow the SS51 Alemagna road to Cortina.
If you come from the North, drive to Innsbruck, then South to the Italian border (Brenner pass). From there follow the A22 motorway and exit at
Bressanone - Val Pusteria. From there follow the indications to
Brunico, then
Dobbiaco, then
Cortina.
