Cortina d'Ampezzo is located in the North of Italy, in the hearth of the southern Dolomitic Alps which, in 2009, where declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Given its position within the mountains, you will need to reach Cortina using a bus connection that starts from the closest airports and train stations.
By Air
If you travel by air, the closest and best-connected airports are:
- Venice: From Venice, you can take the ATVO bus which will bring you directly to Cortina. You can also take the Cortina express bus at the ATVO bus stop. Timetables for January 2016 will be published around mid December.
- Treviso: From Treviso, you can take the ATVO or the Cortina express buses as for Venice. However, you will need to take a taxi to the bus stop, which is the Emisfero shopping mall. Alternatively, you can take the city bus line number 6 to the Treviso train station. From there, you can take a train to Calalzo-Pieve Di Cadore-Cortina (2 changes). From Calalzo, the Dolomiti Bus will take you to Cortina.
- Innsbruck: From the airport, take the bus route F which will bring you to the Innsbruck train station. From there, take a train to Dobbiaco and then a regional bus to Cortina.
Another possibility is to rent a car in Venice or in Innsbruck, as this might be the quickest way to get to Cortina. However, be aware that
winter in the Alps leads to difficult driving conditions. Roads might be icy, slippery, or covered in snow. In these regions
winter gear for the car is compulsory. You will either need to mount winter tires or have snow chains in the car.
By Train
If you come from Italy, the best option if you travel on railways is to take a train to Venice. From there, you can take a
train to
Calalzo-Pieve Di Cadore-Cortina (2 changes). From Calalzo, the
Dolomiti Bus will take you to Cortina. Alternatively, you can take one of the buses (ATVO, Cortina express) that go directly to Cortina. Please see the indications for the Venice airport.
If you come from Northern Europe by train, you should first reach Innsbruck. From there, take a
train to
Dobbiaco and then a
regional bus to Cortina.
By Car
If you come from South (East and West) of Cortina, you need to drive to Venice, and the drive North to Cortina.
If you come from North, drive to Innsbruck, then South to the Italian border (Brenner pass). From there follow the A22 highway and exit at
Bressanone - Val Pusteria. From there follow the indications to
Brunico, then
Dobbiaco, then
Cortina.
